How Mars differs from your Sun, Moon and Venus
Most people know their Sun sign, and many have met their Moon sign. Mars is less familiar, yet it often explains what others notice first in you during an argument, a competition or the last day before a deadline. The Sun is your direction; Mars is your engine. A gentle Sun sign with a forceful Mars can surprise people who only knew the gentle side, and a bold Sun with a patient Mars may talk big and then move with great care.
Mars is often read together with Venus. Venus describes what attracts you, what you value and how you relate; Mars describes how you pursue it and how you assert yourself. In love, Venus is the kind of closeness you are drawn to and Mars is how you act on that pull: whether you make the first move, how you show interest, how you handle friction once you are close. The two planets are old partners in astrology's symbolism, and a chart reads them side by side.
How to find your Mars sign
Mars moves more slowly than the Sun, the Moon, Mercury and Venus. It usually spends about six to seven weeks in a sign. Roughly every two years it turns retrograde, appearing to move backwards against the stars for a while, and during that stretch one stay in a sign can last several months.
Because of this, your birth date nearly always decides your Mars sign. Most dates fall well inside a single stay. Only on the day Mars passes from one sign to the next does the birth time matter, and then the place of birth matters too, because it sets the time zone that converts your local clock time into the universal time in which positions are calculated.
Mars's pace also changes around the zodiac. Its orbit is noticeably oval, and seen from Earth it travels faster through some stretches than others, so its typical stay is shorter in Pisces and Aquarius and longer in Leo and Virgo. That is why the Mars signs are not shared evenly. Among people born between 1925 and 2025, about 6.6% have Mars in Pisces and about 10.0% have Mars in Leo.
Our free birth chart asks for your date, time and place and calculates where Mars actually stood, along with the other planets. If you only want the three main points of a chart, the Big Three calculator finds your Sun, Moon and rising sign.
The twelve Mars signs at a glance
The element is the quickest way in. Fire Mars acts at once, earth Mars acts to build something, air Mars acts through words and people, and water Mars acts from feeling.
- Mars in Aries: one of Mars's own signs; direct, fast and first to move, with anger that flares and fades quickly.
- Mars in Taurus: Mars's detriment; slow to start and very hard to stop, it works through patience and stamina.
- Mars in Gemini: acts through words and ideas; quick in an argument and restless without variety.
- Mars in Cancer: Mars's fall; driven by feeling and the urge to protect, and tenacious once it cares.
- Mars in Leo: acts with pride and warmth, puts its heart into what it leads, and wants its effort to be seen.
- Mars in Virgo: puts its energy into precise, useful work, and would rather improve a thing than start again.
- Mars in Libra: Mars's detriment; acts through partnership and fairness, and weighs every side before moving.
- Mars in Scorpio: Mars's other home sign; concentrated, private and strategic, with great staying power.
- Mars in Sagittarius: moved by a cause or a distant goal; frank, restless and ready to take a chance.
- Mars in Capricorn: Mars's exaltation; disciplined and patient, it climbs steadily towards long-range goals.
- Mars in Aquarius: acts on principle and for the group; independent, and stubborn about its ideas.
- Mars in Pisces: moves by feeling and imagination; often yields where others push, and acts hardest on behalf of others.
Each page describes how the placement acts, how it handles anger and conflict, and how it pursues love and work.
Common misunderstandings
"Mars means aggression." Mars describes energy and what you do with it. Anger is one of its forms, and a real one, but so are initiative, stamina, ambition and the courage to protect someone. In some signs Mars is quick and easy to see; in others it shows mainly as persistence, and people who never raise their voice can have a very strong Mars.
"Mars is the masculine planet." Traditional astrology classed Mars as a masculine planet and Venus as a feminine one, and popular astrology turned that into men's and women's planets. In a chart, everyone has both. Mars describes how any person acts and asserts themselves, whatever their gender.
"Mars in detriment or fall is a weak Mars." Tradition says Mars is at home in Aries and Scorpio, exalted in Capricorn, in detriment in Libra and Taurus, and in fall in Cancer. These dignities describe how easily Mars's direct, forceful nature fits a sign's terms. A Mars in Libra, Taurus or Cancer acts in a different way, through fairness, patience or protection, and often with more thought behind the action. None of this measures a person's strength of will.
"Every Mars sign is equally common." The Mars signs are noticeably uneven, from about 6.6% of people for Pisces to about 10.0% for Leo, because Mars changes speed around its orbit and its retrograde periods hold it in some signs for months.
"If my Mars sign does not fit, astrology does not work for me." First check the date: if Mars changed sign on your birthday, the birth time decides. After that, remember that the sign is only part of the picture. The house Mars falls in and its connections to other planets shape how it shows. Many people recognise their Mars best in how they behave under pressure or when they are angry, and least in how they would describe themselves on a calm day.
