A generational planet: the fourteen-year rhythm
Neptune moves slowly. It spends about fourteen years in each sign and takes about 165 years to travel once round the zodiac. No one lives through all twelve of its signs, and everyone born within the same fourteen years or so shares the same one: your classmates, most of your cousins close to your age, and strangers born in the same years on the other side of the world.
That is why astrology reads the Neptune sign as a generation's backdrop more than as a personal trait. It describes where the imagination of a period tended to look for something to believe in, and so the ideals that children born then grew up surrounded by. Some took those ideals up, some argued with them all their lives, and most did a little of both. Uranus and Pluto work the same way. Jupiter and Saturn move faster and mark smaller cohorts, and the Sun, the Moon and the inner planets describe the individual.
The long, steady rhythm shows in the numbers. Among people born between 1925 and 2025, the seven Neptune signs from Virgo to Pisces each account for between about 13.3% and 13.8%. Leo, at about 4.1%, and Aries, at about 0.6%, look rare only because that century of births catches the last years of one passage and the first months of the other.
How Neptune becomes personal
A sign shared with millions says little about you on its own. What makes Neptune yours is where it sits in your chart and what it touches.
Its house shows the area of life where you are most inclined to idealise and imagine, and where boundaries are most likely to blur: partnership in the seventh house, daily work in the sixth, home and family in the fourth. Its contacts with the personal planets matter even more. Neptune close to your Sun, your Moon or your Venus, or sitting on your rising sign, brings its sensitivity into the personality itself. Two siblings born under the same Neptune sign can feel it very differently, one hardly at all, the other as a constant undertow of intuition and longing.
So a Neptune sign is best read twice: once as the backdrop you share with your generation, and once through its house and contacts, as the part of that backdrop you carry yourself.
How to find your Neptune sign
For most people the birth year is enough. Neptune stays in a sign for more than a decade, and every year in the middle of a passage falls wholly inside it. The exceptions are the border years. Around each change of sign, Neptune's retrograde, the stretch when it appears to move backwards against the stars, carries it back over the border and then forward again, so for a year or two it alternates between the old sign and the new. If you were born in one of those years, your birth date decides, and the time of birth matters only on the day of a crossing.

The Neptune signs and their years
Between 1914 and 2039, Neptune passes through nine signs. The years below run from its first entry into each sign to its final exit, so neighbouring passages share their border years.
- Neptune in Leo, 1914–1929: the ideal gathers around the heart, around romance, creative expression and the admired individual.
- Neptune in Virgo, 1928–1943: the ideal is useful work done well and quiet, practical service.
- Neptune in Libra, 1942–1957: the ideal is the harmonious partnership and fairness between people.
- Neptune in Scorpio, 1955–1970: the imagination is drawn to what is hidden, forbidden or intense.
- Neptune in Sagittarius, 1970–1984: faith turns towards meaning, belief and distant horizons.
- Neptune in Capricorn, 1984–1998: the ideal takes a practical shape, in structures, ambition and what is built to last.
- Neptune in Aquarius, 1998–2012: the ideal is the connected group and a future held in common.
- Neptune in Pisces, 2011–2026: Neptune in its own modern sign, where compassion and imagination have the fewest edges.
- Neptune in Aries, 2025–2039: the passage happening now, which opens a new round of the zodiac with the ideal of courage and beginnings.
Three other signs lie just outside these years. Neptune was in Gemini and Cancer in the early 1900s, and nobody born between 1925 and 2025 has either. After Aries it moves on into Taurus, in 2038 and 2039.
Common misunderstandings
"My Neptune sign describes my personality." Mostly it describes the backdrop of your generation. How much of it lives in you depends on Neptune's house and on its contacts with your Sun, Moon, Venus and rising sign.
"A Neptune sign is a verdict on a generation." Every generation contains every possible Sun, Moon and rising sign. Its Neptune sign names the ideals in the air when it was born, and the blind spots that tend to travel with them. It does not make one generation kinder, wiser or more easily fooled than another.
"Everyone born in the same year has the same Neptune sign." Nearly always, but not in the border years, when Neptune crossed back and forth between two signs. Born in 1942, for instance, you may have Neptune in Virgo or in Libra, depending on the date.
"Neptune only means confusion." Confusion is the price of soft boundaries, and a real one. What comes with it is compassion, imagination, devotion and the capacity to feel what others feel. A strong Neptune often belongs to the person who senses the mood of a room before anyone has spoken.
"Now that Neptune is in Aries, my Neptune sign has changed." Your Neptune sign is fixed at birth. When Neptune moves on, as it did into Aries in 2025, it crosses everyone's chart as a transit, which astrology reads separately, and the birth placement stays as it was.
