How Venus differs from the Sun and the Moon in love
Your Sun sign describes identity and direction, what you are building towards. Your Moon sign describes your emotional needs, what you require in order to feel safe. Venus describes attraction and affection: what catches your eye, and how you give warmth to someone once it has.
In love, the three often tell different parts of the same story. Venus can explain why you fell for someone, the Moon why you feel at home with them, and the Sun what you want your life together to be about. A person with Venus in Gemini and the Moon in Cancer might be drawn to a quick talker and then find that what keeps them there is a partner who makes a home. Neither placement is wrong. They describe different moments.
Venus has a natural partner in Mars. Traditionally, Venus describes attraction and receptivity, what draws you and how you welcome closeness, while Mars describes desire and pursuit, how you go after what you want. Reading the two together says far more about a person's way of loving than either alone.
Venus also stays close to the Sun. Seen from the Earth, it is never more than 47° away, which is why it appears only as a morning or evening star near sunrise or sunset. In a chart this means your Venus is in your Sun's sign or at most two signs away on either side. Someone with the Sun in Leo has Venus in Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo or Libra, and never in Scorpio or Taurus.
How to find your Venus sign
Venus usually stays in one sign for about 25 days. About every year and a half it turns retrograde, appearing to move backwards for a while, and a stay that includes one of those turns can stretch to several months, about four at the longest. Because of this, your birth date nearly always decides your Venus sign on its own.
The exception is the day Venus changes sign. On that day, the time of birth decides, and the place matters too, because it fixes the time zone your local clock time has to be converted from. A change of sign that happened in the evening in one country happened the following morning in another.
Natalore's free chart asks for your date, time and place of birth, calculates where Venus actually stood, and draws it in your chart wheel alongside the rest of the sky. The big three calculator uses the same chart. If you do not know your birth time, the date is still enough except on the few days a year when Venus changes sign.

Each page describes what the placement finds attractive, how it shows in love and where it tends to struggle. The list below gives the share of people born with each.
Common misunderstandings
"My Venus sign decides who I am compatible with." It does not, at least not on its own. Venus describes your taste and your way of showing affection. How two people get on depends on both whole charts, the Moon and Mars as much as Venus, and on the two people themselves.
"Venus is only about romance." It covers friendship, pleasure and taste as well. Many people recognise their Venus first in what they enjoy and find beautiful, and only later in how they love.
"Some Venus signs are bad at love." Tradition says Venus rules Taurus and Libra, is exalted in Pisces, in detriment in Aries and Scorpio, and in fall in Virgo. These dignities describe how easily Venus's wish for harmony and pleasure finds expression in a sign's terms. They say nothing about how well anyone loves. A Venus in Aries loves with honesty and nerve, a Venus in Virgo with an attention to detail that other signs rarely match.
"My Venus sign must be the same as my Sun sign." It often is, but it can also be one or two signs away, so the birthday alone does not tell you. Checking takes a moment in a real chart.
"Being born with Venus retrograde is bad luck in love." Venus turns retrograde about every year and a half, so plenty of people are born with it that way. Astrologers read it as a more inward, reflective way of relating, one that tends to think hard about what it values before it shows it, not as a flaw.
