Moon sign

Your Moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon was passing through when you were born. It describes your emotional needs: how you react before you think, what makes you feel safe, and what you reach for when you are tired. The Moon changes sign about every two and a quarter days, so on the day it moves, your birth time decides which Moon you have.

What the Moon stands for in a chart

In a birth chart, the Sun is what you are building towards and the Moon is what you come home to. It stands for your emotional needs, the reactions that arrive before any thought, and the conditions under which you feel safe enough to rest. Astrologers also tie it to memory and habit: the routines you fall back on, the tastes and sounds that still mean comfort years later, the way you look after the people you love when something goes wrong.

The Moon reflects light rather than making its own, and its old symbolism follows from that. It describes what you take in and respond to more than what you set out to do. Where the Sun is a direction, the Moon is a state: how full or empty you feel, what restores you, what you need from the people closest to you.

The sign the Moon occupies gives all of this a particular style. Each sign brings an element (fire, earth, air or water), a modality (cardinal, fixed or mutable) and a ruling planet. A Moon in a fire sign tends to settle a feeling by acting on it; a Moon in an earth sign, by making something steady and practical. That is why two people can have the same need for safety and look for it in completely different places.

How the Moon sign differs from the Sun sign

Most people know their Sun sign because it can be read from a birthday. The Sun describes identity and purpose, the self you present and grow into. The Moon sign describes the private weather underneath. Two people with the same Sun sign and different Moons can look alike at work and behave very differently at home or after an argument.

This is why many people find that their Moon sign describes them better in close relationships. The Moon is the part a partner, a flatmate or a family member meets every day. It shows most when you are tired or completely at ease, the moments when you stop presenting and simply react.

The two work together rather than compete. When the Sun and Moon share an element, what you want and what you need tend to pull in the same direction. When they differ, a person can feel two pulls at once. A Sun in Leo may want the stage while a Moon in Virgo needs to check every detail before stepping onto it; a Sun in Capricorn may be driven and reserved in public while a Moon in Cancer longs for home and closeness. Neither is the "real" you. A chart reads them side by side, with the rising sign as the third of its main points.

How to find your Moon sign

The Moon is the fastest-moving body in a chart. It stays in one sign for about two and a quarter days, sometimes nearer two and sometimes nearer two and a half. On most birth dates it was in a single sign all day, and the date alone is enough.

On the day the Moon changes sign, the birth time decides which Moon a person has. A child born before breakfast and a child born after dinner on the same date can have different Moon signs. This is also why tables that give a Moon sign from the date alone are sometimes wrong.

The place of birth matters too. It fixes the time zone, and your local clock time has to be converted into the universal time the Moon's position is calculated in. A change of sign that happened late in the evening in one country happened the next morning somewhere else.

Our free birth chart asks for your date, time and place, and calculates where the Moon actually stood. If you do not know your birth time, it still works: when the Moon changed sign that day, it names both possible signs and tells you that an exact time settles it.

The twelve Moon signs at a glance

The element is the quickest way in. Fire Moons tend to deal with a feeling by doing something, earth Moons by making life steady, air Moons by understanding and talking, and water Moons by feeling it all the way through.

  • Moon in Aries: feelings flare fast and pass fast; comfort comes from acting on them, not from waiting.
  • Moon in Taurus: the Moon's exaltation; steadied by the familiar and the senses, and slow to be shaken.
  • Moon in Gemini: a feeling becomes clear once it has words; needs conversation and room to change its mind.
  • Moon in Cancer: the Moon's own sign; deeply attached to home and its people, with a long and loyal memory.
  • Moon in Leo: needs to be seen and to give warmth openly; indifference hurts it more than conflict does.
  • Moon in Virgo: calms down by being useful and putting things in order; shows love in small practical acts.
  • Moon in Libra: finds its balance in good company and fairness, and feels discord in a room at once.
  • Moon in Scorpio: the Moon's fall; feels intensely and privately, and gives trust slowly and then completely.
  • Moon in Sagittarius: needs space and something to look forward to; lifts a low mood by finding meaning in it.
  • Moon in Capricorn: the Moon's detriment; keeps feelings in reserve and shows care through reliability.
  • Moon in Aquarius: needs a little distance to feel close, and cares through friendship and honesty.
  • Moon in Pisces: takes in the moods around it; imaginative and compassionate, it needs time alone to find its own feelings again.

Each page describes how the placement feels from the inside and how it shows in close relationships. The full list follows below, with the share of people born under each.

Common misunderstandings

"My Moon sign is the real me." The Moon does not override the Sun; it covers different ground. The Sun describes what you aim at, the Moon what you need in order to keep going. If your Moon sign fits you better, you are probably thinking of your private life, which is the Moon's territory. The guide Which zodiac sign am I really? compares the three.

"Some Moon signs are bad." Tradition says the Moon is at home in Cancer, exalted in Taurus, in detriment in Capricorn and in fall in Scorpio. These dignities describe how easily the Moon's receptive, comforting nature finds expression in a sign's terms. They say nothing about the worth of a person's inner life. A Moon in Capricorn or Scorpio tends to work harder to show what it feels, and often feels it with more depth and staying power because of that.

"Some Moon signs are rare." Each sign holds about 8.3% of people, Virgo 8.4%. The Moon passes through every sign many times a year, so no sign is favoured.

"The Moon sign is the Moon phase." The phase is the angle between the Sun and the Moon; the sign is where the Moon stood in the zodiac. Both appear in a chart, and they describe different things.

"If my Moon sign does not fit, astrology does not work for me." First check the birth time: if you were born on a day when the Moon changed sign, a guess of the hour can give the wrong Moon. After that, remember that the sign is only part of the picture. The Moon's house and its connections to other planets shape how it shows, and many people recognise their Moon only when someone close to them reads the description.

Questions and answers

What does my Moon sign mean?

It describes your emotional nature: what you need in order to feel safe, how you react before thinking, and what comforts you when things go wrong. Where the Sun sign speaks of identity and direction, the Moon sign speaks of the private self that people close to you know best. Its element, modality and ruling planet shape the style of those needs.

What is the difference between a Sun sign and a Moon sign?

The Sun sign is where the Sun stood at your birth and describes your core identity and what you are working towards. The Moon sign is where the Moon stood and describes your feelings, instincts and needs. The Sun can be read from a birthday; the Moon moves much faster, so it takes a proper calculation and sometimes your birth time.

Can I find my Moon sign without my birth time?

Usually, yes. The Moon stays in one sign for about two and a quarter days, so on most dates it is in the same sign all day. On the day it changes sign, the birth time decides. Our free birth chart shows both possible signs in that case and tells you that an exact time settles it.

Is my Moon sign the same as the Moon phase I was born under?

No. The phase describes the angle between the Sun and the Moon, from new Moon to full Moon and back. The sign describes where in the zodiac the Moon stood. A full Moon can fall in any sign, and a Moon in Cancer can be new, full or anything between. A chart uses both, for different things.

Which Moon sign is the rarest?

None of them is rare. The Moon moves through the whole zodiac so often that each sign ends up with close to a twelfth of people: about 8.3% for every sign, and 8.4% for Virgo, across the century our figures cover. A Moon sign can feel uncommon because few people know theirs.
