Mercury retrograde 2026

Mercury turns retrograde three times in 2026, each time within a single water sign: from 26 February to 20 March in Pisces, from 29 June to 23 July in Cancer, and from 24 October to 13 November in Scorpio. The backward motion is only apparent. Tradition reads these weeks as a time for review and unfinished business, not as bad luck.

What Mercury retrograde is

Seen from Earth, the planets usually move forward through the zodiac, from Aries towards Taurus and on round the circle. Mercury retrograde is the stretch of a few weeks in which Mercury seems to do the opposite. It slows, stops against the background of stars, drifts back over the degrees it has just crossed, then stops again and resumes its usual course.

The planet never actually reverses. Mercury circles the Sun about four times for every once the Earth goes round, so it keeps catching up with us on the inside track. Each time it passes between the Earth and the Sun, its motion as we see it runs against the usual direction of the zodiac for a while. Because the Earth is moving too, these overtakings come a little more than three times a year, and each one produces a retrograde.

The two turning points are called stations. At the station retrograde, Mercury appears to stand still and then begins to move backwards; at the station direct, it stands still again and turns forward. The table above gives both stations of each period to the minute, with the degree where Mercury stands.

Three retrogrades in 2026, all in water signs

This year each of Mercury's retrogrades begins and ends in the same sign, and all three signs belong to the water element: Pisces, Cancer and Scorpio. The dates below are UTC calendar days, and for every station in 2026 they are the same in London and New York. Each period lasts about three weeks.

Water is the element of feeling, memory and attachment, and Mercury, the planet of thinking and speech, has to work in its terms. Tradition would read this year's reviews as concerned less with facts and schedules and more with what was felt, remembered or left unsaid.

26 February to 20 March: in Pisces

Mercury stops at 22° Pisces and backs up to 8° Pisces before turning forward. Pisces is mutable water, ruled by Jupiter and in modern astrology by Neptune, and it is the sign where tradition finds Mercury least at ease: in detriment and in fall, because Pisces thinks in images and impressions where Mercury prefers clean distinctions. A retrograde here is read as a time to go back over what stayed vague: the half-remembered conversation, the plan never quite written down, the creative work that needs a second draft. The page on Mercury in Pisces describes the sign's way of thinking in full.

29 June to 23 July: in Cancer

The midyear retrograde runs from 26° Cancer back to 16° Cancer. Cancer is cardinal water, ruled by the Moon, and Mercury in Cancer thinks through memory and feeling. Tradition reads a retrograde here as a turn towards the past and towards home: family stories retold, old photographs taken out again, a conversation with someone you grew up with that picks up years later. It suits revisiting better than starting.

24 October to 13 November: in Scorpio

The last retrograde of the year runs from 20° Scorpio back to 5° Scorpio. Scorpio is fixed water, ruled by Mars and in modern astrology by Pluto, and Mercury in Scorpio is the probing, private mind that wants to know what lies underneath. Tradition reads a retrograde here as a time for research and for the second look at a matter you thought was closed, and for the questions nobody asked the first time. The whole period falls inside the Venus retrograde that runs from 3 October to 14 November; the retrograde calendar for 2026 shows how the two overlap, and our guide to Mercury retrograde in Scorpio looks at what these weeks touch for each rising sign.

What tradition reads into it

Astrology has long treated a retrograde Mercury as the mind turning back on itself. The planet of messages and plans appears to retrace its steps, and tradition takes the hint: these are weeks for rereading, revising, reconsidering and finishing, and many of the words that fit begin with "re". Astrologers traditionally advise extra care with communication and plans in these weeks, which in practice means checking details twice, confirming arrangements and reading carefully before replying.

The tradition does not read the period as bad luck. The popular version, in which every device fails and every plan falls through, is not what it says and not how we read it. Mercury is retrograde for several weeks of every year, and ordinary life goes on through all of them. What changes, in the traditional view, is the emphasis, from launching new things to looking at what is already there.

Some astrologers also watch the "shadow", the stretch of zodiac between the two stations. Mercury crosses it three times: forwards in the weeks before the retrograde, backwards during it, and forwards again afterwards. Themes that surface on the first crossing are often said to come back for review on the second.

How it touches your own chart

A retrograde happens in the sky for everyone at once, so on its own it says little about any one person. Tradition gives it more weight in your chart when the retrograde degrees fall on one of your own planets, or when your Sun, Moon or rising sign is in the sign it occupies. Our big three calculator shows where those three stand.

Being born during a Mercury retrograde is a different matter: a fixed feature of your chart rather than a passing season, and the Mercury sign page explains it. The following year's periods are on Mercury retrograde 2027, where the pattern begins to move from water signs into air.

Questions and answers

When is Mercury retrograde in 2026?

Three times: from 26 February to 20 March, from 29 June to 23 July, and from 24 October to 13 November. These are UTC calendar days, and in 2026 every station falls on the same calendar day in London and New York as well. The table on this page gives each station to the minute in all three time zones.

What sign is Mercury retrograde in during 2026?

Each 2026 retrograde stays inside one water sign from start to finish: Pisces in February and March, Cancer in June and July, and Scorpio in October and November. In traditional terms, a water-sign retrograde turns the review towards what was felt, remembered or left unsaid, more than towards facts and schedules.

Is Mercury retrograde bad luck?

No. Tradition does not treat it as bad luck or as a forecast that things will go wrong. It reads these weeks as better suited to looking back than to pushing ahead: rereading, revising, confirming arrangements and finishing what was started. Mercury spends several weeks of every year retrograde, and ordinary life carries on through all of them.

Does Mercury really move backwards?

No. Mercury always travels the same way round the Sun. It goes round about four times for every orbit of the Earth, and when it overtakes us by passing between the Earth and the Sun, its motion as we see it runs backwards against the stars for about three weeks. Retrograde describes how it looks from here, not what the planet does.

How long does Mercury retrograde last?

About three weeks. In 2026 the shortest of the three periods, in Scorpio, lasts a little over twenty days, and the longest, in Cancer, a little over twenty-four. The station times in the table on this page give the exact span of each one.
