Moon sign calculator

When were you born?

Free, with no e-mail address. Birth time and place come next, and both can be skipped.

Enter your birth date, and your birth time if you know it, and this free calculator finds the sign the Moon was in when you were born. On most days the date alone settles it. The chart is calculated in your browser and needs no e-mail. Below, we explain what your Moon sign describes and when the time makes the difference.

What your Moon sign describes

Your Moon sign is the sign of the zodiac the Moon occupied at the moment you were born. Where the Sun sign speaks about identity and direction, the Moon speaks about needs: what makes you feel safe, how you react before you have time to think, how you want to be comforted and how you comfort others. It is the part of the chart that shows most at home, at the end of a long day, and with the people closest to you.

The sign's element sets the broad style. A Moon in a fire sign tends to settle a feeling by acting on it. In an earth sign it looks for steadiness in routine, familiar food and things it can touch. In an air sign it needs to put a feeling into words before it can let it go, and in a water sign it needs closeness and time to feel something all the way through.

Classical astrology adds the Moon's relationship with each sign. It is at home in Cancer, the sign it rules, and exalted in Taurus, where it is traditionally at its steadiest. In the opposite signs, Capricorn and Scorpio, it is held to be less at ease, and its feelings tend to be kept further from view. Our guide to the Moon sign walks through all twelve, and each placement has its own page, from the Moon in Aries to the Moon in Pisces.

When the date is enough and when the time decides

The Moon moves faster than anything else in the chart. It stays in one sign for only about two and a quarter days before moving on to the next. For the calculator this has a simple consequence: on most dates the Moon spends the whole day in one sign, and your birth date alone decides your Moon sign.

On the day the Moon changes sign, it matters when you were born. A birth in the morning of such a day may fall under one Moon sign and a birth that evening under the next. If you enter a birth time, the calculator places the Moon for that minute and the question is settled. If you leave the time out, we calculate the chart for noon, check the whole day, and, when the Moon changed sign during it, the free chart names both candidate signs instead of choosing one for you.

When you see two signs, the birth time is the reliable way to decide. Look for it on your birth certificate, if it records the time, or in the hospital record of your birth. Until you have it, read both placement pages. One may describe you more closely than the other, but treat that as a hint rather than an answer.

How to get the most accurate result

Time zones matter more for the Moon than for most parts of a chart. The Moon enters a new sign at one moment for the whole world, but that moment falls on different local dates and hours in different places. So the birthplace helps even when you only want your Moon sign: it tells the calculator which clock your birth time was written in, and the historical time-zone and daylight-saving rules for that place and date are applied automatically. Without a birthplace, the time is read in the time zone of the device you are using, which is only right if you were born in the same zone.

A rough time is still worth something. If you know your birth fell between two times, enter the earliest, note the Moon sign, then enter the latest. If both give the same sign, your Moon is settled even without the exact minute.

The calculation itself is not where the doubt lies. Our positions agree with an independent reference ephemeris to within 17 arc-seconds for the planets, the Moon included, so on a day when the Moon changes sign, the only open question is your birth time.

Your Moon beside your Sun and rising sign

The Moon sign rarely works alone. When the Sun and Moon share an element, what you want and what you need tend to point the same way. When their signs sit awkwardly together, the Sun's aims and the Moon's needs can pull apart, and a good deal of a person's character tends to live in how that pull is handled. The rising sign adds a third layer, the way you meet the world. The big three calculator reads all three together, and the rising sign calculator explains what the birth time and place add.

Questions and answers

Do I need my birth time to find my Moon sign?

Usually not. The Moon stays in one sign for about two and a quarter days, so on most dates it is in the same sign all day and the date is enough. Only when the Moon changed sign on your birthday does the time decide. Without a time, the free chart tells you so and names both signs.

Why does the calculator show two Moon signs?

Because the Moon moved from one sign into the next during your birth date, and without a birth time we cannot tell which side of that moment you were born on. We name both rather than guess. Your birth certificate or hospital record may give the time; enter it, and the calculator settles your Moon sign.

What is the difference between my Sun sign and my Moon sign?

The Sun sign describes your core direction, what you are working towards. The Moon sign describes your emotional needs: what makes you feel safe, how you react before thinking, how you look for comfort. The Sun sign is set by the date, while the Moon changes sign roughly every two and a quarter days, so people who share a Sun sign often have different Moons.

Can my birthplace change my Moon sign?

The place itself does not move the Moon into another sign, but its time zone can decide the answer. Your birth time is local, and the calculator converts it with the time-zone and daylight-saving rules in force where and when you were born. On a day when the Moon changed sign, that conversion can put you on one side of the change or the other.

Is the Moon sign calculator free?

Yes. The chart is calculated in your own browser and needs no e-mail address. You see your chart wheel with your Sun and Moon signs, and your rising sign as well if you add the birth time and place, each with a short reading. A detailed written reading can be ordered afterwards if you want one.
